Gombe - The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Gombe State Chapter, has commended the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe (FTHG) for destroying 1,087kg of expired and substandard drugs.
The exercise, which took place at the hospital's incinerator, was witnessed by top officials from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
Speaking on the development, Mohammed Mu'azu Hina, Organising Secretary, NYCN Gombe State Chapter, praised the hospital's Management for their efforts. "We commend the Management of FTHG for this bold step," he said. "It shows they prioritize patient safety and well-being."
Hina also praised the Medical Director of FTHG, Dr. Yusuf M Abdullahi, for his good work. "We call for an extension of his tenure," he added. "This will allow him to continue his excellent service to the people of Gombe State."
The destruction of the expired and substandard drugs is a regular exercise. It ensures that patients receive only quality medications, reducing the risk of harm from expired or fake drugs.
The NYCN Gombe State Chapter also urged other healthcare facilities in the state to emulate the example of FTHG. "We call on other hospitals and healthcare facilities to follow suit," Hina said. "This will help to ensure that patients receive quality care and medications."
The exercise was also commended by representatives from NAFDAC and NESREA. They praised the hospital's Management for their commitment to patient safety and environmental sustainability.
The destruction of the expired and substandard drugs is a testament to the hospital's commitment to providing quality healthcare services. It also demonstrates the hospital's adherence to international best practices in healthcare delivery.
